A major 7.0-magnitude earthquake struck Indonesia's Papua on Saturday, the US Geological Survey said, but no tsunami warning was issued. The quake struck on land at 1:42 p.m. local time at a depth of 75 kilometers, 237 kilometers east of Enarotali, the USGS said. Local seismologists had measured the quake at 7.2 magnitude. An Indonesian meteorological survey official said the quake struck on land and there was no danger of a tsunami off the thinly populated province, formerly called Irian Jaya, in Indonesia's far east. People in the area told AFP they felt the quake strongly and hundreds went running into the streets, witnesses told AFP. Narsi Bay said she was in a meeting on the first floor of a hotel in Jayapura when she felt "strong shaking." The sprawling Indonesian archipelago is on the Pacific's "Ring of Fire" and gets regular earthquakes. A magnitude 9.1 quake struck the northern Indonesian province of Aceh in 2004 triggering huge tsunami waves which killed more than 230,000 people in 13 countries around the Indian Ocean. Full coverage of the 2012 Tsunami that hit in April, take a look at the worst hit places and its path of destruction it left behind along with all the news predictions, death toll, analysis, countries affected, magnitude, predictions, aftermath The 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake was an undersea megathrust earthquake that occurred at 00:58:53 UTC on Sunday, 26 December 2004, with an epicentre off the west coast of Sumatra, Indonesia. The quake itself is known by the scientific community as the Sumatra--Andaman earthquake.[3][4] The resulting tsunami is given various names, including the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, South Asian tsunami, Indonesian tsunami, and Boxing Day tsunami. The earthquake was caused by subduction and triggered a series of devastating tsunamis along the coasts of most landmasses bordering the Indian Ocean, killing over 230,000 people in fourteen countries, and inundating coastal communities with waves up to 30 meters (98 ft) high.[5] It was one of the deadliest natural disasters in recorded history. Indonesia was the hardest-hit country, followed by Sri Lanka, India, and Thailand. With a magnitude of Mw 9.1--9.3, it is the third largest earthquake ever recorded on a seismograph. The earthquake had the longest duration of faulting ever observed, between 8.3 and 10 minutes. It caused the entire planet to vibrate as much as 1 centimetre (0.4 inches)[6] and triggered other earthquakes as far away as Alaska.[7] Its epicentre was between Simeulue and mainland Indonesia.[8] The plight of the affected people and countries prompted a worldwide humanitarian response. In all, the worldwide community donated more than $14 billion (2004 US$) in humanitarian aid.[9] 8.6 8.7 ude 8.8. In February 2005 scientists revised the estimate of the magnitude to 9.0.[10] Although the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center has accepted these new numbers, the United States Geological Survey has so far not changed its estimate of 9.1. The most recent studies in 2006 have obtained a magnitude of Mw 9.1--9.3. Dr. Hiroo Kanamori of the California Institute of Technology believes that Mw 9.2 is a good representative value for the size of this great earthquake.[11] In a study of Chlieh et al., by fitting ob Numerous aftershocks were reported off the Andaman Islands, the Nicobar Islands and the region of the original epicentre in the hours and days that followed. The magnitude 8.7 2005 Sumatra earthquake, which originated off the coast of the Sumatran island of Nias, is not considered an aftershock, despite its proximity to the epicenter, and was most likely triggered by stress changes associated with the 2004 event.[17] This earthquake was so large that it produced its own aftershocks (some registering a magnitude of as great as 6.1) and presently ranks as the 7th largest earthquake on record since 1900. Other aftershocks of up to magnitude 6.6 continued to shake the region daily for up to three or four months.[18][19] As well as continuing aftershocks, the energy released by the original earthquake continued to make its presence felt well after the event. A week after the earthquake, its reverberations could still be measured, providing valuable scientific data about the Earth's interior. The 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake came just three days after a magnitude 8.1 earthquake in an uninhabited region west of New Zealand's subantarctic Auckland Islands, and north of Australia's Macquarie Island. This is unusual, since earthquakes of magnitude 8 or more occur only about once per year on average.[20] Some seismologists have speculated about a connection between these two earthquakes, saying that the former one might have been a catalyst to the Indian Ocean earthquake, as the two earthquakes happened on opposite sides of the Indo-Australian Plate. However, the U.S. Geological Survey sees no evidence of a causal relationship in this incident. Coincidentally, the earthquake struck almost exactly one year (to the hour) after a 6.6 magnitude earthquake killed an estimated 30,000 people in the city of Bam in Iran on 26 December 2003.[21] 005, a magnitude 8.7 earthquake hit roughly the same area of the Indian Ocean but did not result in a major tsunami. According to the U.S. Geological Survey a total of 227,898 people died (see table below for details).[52] Measured in lives lost, this is one of the ten worst earthquakes in recorded history, as well as the single worst tsunami in history. Indonesia was the worst affected area, with most death toll estimates at around 170,000.[53] However, another report by health minister Fadilah Supari has estimated the death total to be as high as 220,000 in Indonesia alone, giving a total of 280,000 casualties Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, India, Sri Lanka, Maldives, Seychelles Somalia, Madagascar.
Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/ViralVideoZone Indonesia issued a fresh tsunami warning, which extended for two hours. Notably, Indonesia had earlier scaled down the tsunami warning which was issued after the 8.6 quake. The tremor was felt in Malaysia, where it caused high-rise buildings to shake for about a minute, and in Singapore, Thailand, Bangladesh and India.

First video: Moment of Indonesia earthquake, Aceh locals flee amid tsunami warning ---8.9 magnitude earthquake in Ache Indonesia---
A powerful 8.6-magnitude earthquake struck more than two hundred miles off the coast of the Indonesian island of Sumatra on Wednesday spreading panic among residents and reviving memories of the devastating 2004 quake, which struck in the same area. The Indonesian government said there were no reports of casualties or significant damage from the initial quake but several strong aftershocks were reported in the afternoon and early evening. The largest measured 8.2, the U.S. Geological Survey said. The earthquake was felt in Singapore, Thailand, Bangladesh, Malaysia and India, news agencies reported, with coastal areas of southern Thailand and eastern India declaring tsunami alerts and Indonesia issuing a tsunami warning following the aftershocks. Indonesia's president, Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, told reporters at a news conference in Jakarta that the quake had caused "a little bit of panic."
A massive earthquake of 8.6 magnitude hit waters off Indonesia triggering tsunami fears across the Indian Ocean nations, including India, reviving memories of the 2004 devastation that had claimed tens of thousands of lives in the region. (Earlier reports said the magnitude was 8.7 on the Richter scale.) The quake struck off Indonesia's Sumatra island, U.S. and Indonesian monitors reported, prompting an Indian Ocean-wide tsunami alert. The tremors were felt far and wide in southern and eastern parts of India, Sri Lanka, Australia, Thailand, Singapore and Malaysia. The quake's magnitude was 8.7 on Richter scale and it struck 431-km off the Indonesian city of Banda Aceh. In India, tremors were felt in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, Andaman and Nicobar islands, Assam and West Bengal. Banda Aceh in Indonesia was near the epicentre of a devastating 9.1-magnitude quake in 2004 that triggered a tsunami across the Indian Ocean, which killed 220,000 people, including 170,000 in Aceh. Residents in Banda Aceh reported the ground shaking violently. The ground shook for nearly five minutes with telephone connections going down briefly. Terrified people left their dwellings and ran for cover. People were trying to leave affected area, with whatever modes of transport available. Traffic jams were seen everywhere.

8.7 & 8.2 Magnitude EARTHQUAKE Hits INDONESIA (Aceh) - TSUNAMI WARNING! The undersea earthquake struck just after 2.30pm local time (6.38pm AEST) and at a depth of 33 kilometers. The quake's epicenter was located 431 kilometers southwest of Banda Aceh on the island of Sumatra. An Indian Ocean-wide tsunami watch was put in place immediately following the quake, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said. The tsunami watch was in place for 28 countries, including Indonesia, India, Sri Lanka, Australia, Burma and Thailand. The Joint Australian Tsunami Warning Centre said there was no tsunami threat to the Australian mainland, islands or territories. A spokesman for the US Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre said: ''Earthquakes of this size have the potential to generate a widespread destructive tsunami that can affect coastlines across the entire Indian Ocean basin.'' Amy Vaughn, from the USGS, told Sky News that experts were working to determine precisely where the earthquake occurred and how strong it was. "With an earthquake of this magnitude ... what happens is that basically a large body of water is disturbed by the movement of the fault," she said. "Being this close to the west coast of Sumatra, it could be devastating for the region." People living along India's eastern coast were told to move away from the shore, Sky News reported. Tremors were felt in the cities of Kolkata, Chennai and Bangalore. The Indian National Center for Ocean Information Service was quick to issue a red high-level warning for the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, located in the Indian Ocean. Lower alerts were issued for the coastlines of Andhra Tradesh and Tamil Nadu, in the country's southeast. Indonesia straddles a series of fault lines that makes the vast island nation prone to volcanic and seismic activity. A giant 9.1-magnitude quake off the country on December 26, 2004, triggered a tsunami in the Indian Ocean that killed 230,000 people, nearly three-quarters of them in Aceh. The earthquake monitoring agency in Indonesia said the tsunami warning would remain in place for another few hours, but that there had been no reports so far of a low tide, which would indicate the water was receding before building into a tsunami. Map showing the location of the earthquake The tremor was felt as far away as Singapore, Thailand, Sri Lanka and India. "There was a tremor felt by all of us working in the building," a man called Vincent in Calcutta, India, told the BBC. "All just ran out of the building and people were asked not to use the elevator. There was a minute of chaos where all started ringing up to their family and asking about their well-being." The Thai office of disaster management said people along the coasts of Phuket, Phang Na and Andaman province should heed warnings and evacuate. Tsunami warning sirens, set up in many vulnerable areas after the 2004 disaster, were heard in Phuket, where correspondents said people were calmly following evacuation routes to safe zones.
